바보 안드레아스와 소(小) 바실레이오스의 전기로 보는 중기 비잔티움의 문화와 종말론 연구
이 연구는 비잔티움의 문화적 전성기인 9세기와 11세기 사이에 저술된 두 성 인 ‘성스러운 바보 안드레아스와 소(小) 바실레이오스’의 전기를 분석해 당시 비 잔티움인들이 공유하고 있던 문화적 정체성과 문학적인 취향에 대하여 고찰한 다. 이 두 작품들을 저술한 신원미상의 작가들은 기존의 성인전의 문학적 틀을 벗어난 이야기를 저술해 당대 독자층의 마음을 움직이는데 성공했다. 이 연구를 통해 종교 문학 장르의 하나로 여겨지는 성인전이 문화사와 사회사를 이어주는 좋은 매개체로써 활용될 수 있음을 학계에 소개하고자 한다. 성스러운 바보 안 드레아스와 소(小) 바실레이오스의 성인전은 이러한 역사적인 배경과 맞물려 당 대 비잔티움 독자들이 겪고 있던 문화적인 갈증을 종교적인 이야기의 틀을 빌 려서 해결해주었다. 먼저 두 작품의 줄거리와 특징을 소개한 뒤, 이 글을 통해 중기 비잔티움의 상황과 문화적인 특수성, 두 작품의 문학적 구성 및 메시지, 마지막으로 이 작품들이 이후 비잔티움의 성인전 장르와 성인 숭배 문화의 역 사적인 흐름에 끼친 영향에 대하여 분석한다. 이러한 과정을 통하여 당시의 비 잔티움인들은 성인전을 단순한 종교 문학이 아니라 개인의 목소리를 내는 문화 적인 매개체로 사용했다는 사실을 설명할 것이다.
The Lives of Andrew the Fool and Basil the Younger : Culture and Eschatology in Middle Byzantium
This study examines the Lives , which were written between the ninth and eleventh century, of Andrew the Fool and Basil the Younger to investigate the shared cultural identity and literary taste of their contemporary Byzantines. The anonymous authors of these texts moved the hearts of their audience by writing the stories that stood outside of the expected horizon of their time. Through this study, the scholarship will be introduced to the fact that Byzantine hagiography is not merely a genre of religious literature and thus can be utilized as a bridge between cultural and social historical studies. These two Lives quenched the cultural thirst of the middle Byzantine audience by discussing about eschatological and mystical issues. This study introduces their narrative structure, literary message, and historical impact on the cults of the saints and subsequent hagiographical productions. Thus, at the time, the Byzantines employed the genre of hagiography as a means of projecting their personal voice rather than naively reading them as a piece of religious literature.
